Seven Crazy Questions With The Sour Notes

7.What advice would you give to kids who dream of doing something similar to what you are doing musically or those who want to pursue the arts in general?
Just do it. There are ‘do-ers & say-ers’ in this world, not enough & too many of em respectively…
Be part of the solution.  Don’t add to the mess.

6. What’s your favorite animal to wrap in wax paper?
Probably Louie, I bet he’d like that. Cheeky little monkey.

5. If Dr. Seuss and Sylvia Plath had an affair, which member of your band would be their love child and why?

Probably Andrew because he wears fanny packs and dark socks with shorts.

4. Were there any art teachers or classes in school that inspired you to start a band?
Hmmm. Teachers really aren’t in the business of inspiring kids to start bands. It would be rad if they did! And I’m sure some do. But I don’t think parents would like that very much. However, we’ve all had teachers that have been supportive and encouraging to pursue the interests and creative endeavors we are passionate about, those sort of support networks have inspired each one of us to take a leap into dedicating our lives to music in this era, which isn’t the easiest and financially logical thing to do with ones life! I wish I had classes like this where I went to school. To be honest, I didn’t really like school. It was very conforming and restrictive and I didn’t play sports or liked any of the crappy stuff my classmates did. So I didn’t really care about it. I really regretted that when I was applying to college because I realized if I had worked harder at what I really wanted to do (music) instead of just trying to get by and not really taking classes I was really interested in, I would have gotten to go to a school that focused on music. Its not totally my fault, i had to move alot, but still. Over time, I have realized that being passionate about your art and creative endeavors means being dedicated, not just inspired. Artists shouldn’t have to be inspired. They are always inspired. Being inspired is easy. Doing something about it is hard. If you are serious about dedicating your life and time to music, it’s not just about partying and stuff. It’s actually a lot of hard work! You have to be willing to force yourself to work hard without any promise of reward because it’s a priority. Just like homework, you have to force yourself to work on a song and ignore tv and video games and parties sometimes. I probably learned most about what it takes to be musician from exhausting the ‘drills’ given by my Tennis instructor.

3. How do you feel about the effects on art programs in public schools due to the recent changes in the education system?

I always enjoyed art classes the most in school.  When else can you find a dedicated time in the day to pursue all those creative ideas you have? I guess I can see from an uninspired standpoint, how that isn’t very useful in the real world as say learning cursive, speed typing or memorizing geometric formulas. But we would argue that those classes allow you to think creatively which is a super important skill to develop and can help you in all sorts of facets of life. Even if you don’t want to do something artistic as a career. It’s always the creative and innovative types of folks that make an impact in their field, from Steve Jobs to Condolezza Rice… Because its scary and hard to think uniquely and independently about stuff, especially at first, rather than taking well worn roads.

2. How did you first hear about Attendance Records, and what is it that enticed you to get involved?

Tomas, who used to be the bassist in the Eastern Sea before moving back to Houston and pursuing his teaching career, would mention it whenever we ran into him, like at the grocery store in the middle of the night. That summer he lived in a tent next to the trailer their drummer lived in. That is called “hard in the game.” Before he left Austin, he reached out to a bunch of folks about looking into it and we did. One day we got an email from Jenna, that’s that!
